The Media Society stands for freedom of expression and the encouragement of high standards in journalism. It is unique in bringing together people working in all branches of the media – radio and television production and broadcasting, newspapers and magazines, new media, academia and media law. Its membership includes senior figures and those at the beginning of their careers.

The Media Society holds meetings and receptions through the year to discuss topics of current interest to its members, such as communications legislation, privacy and the press, the future of public service broadcasting, political reporting and the development of digital services. Members’ guests are welcome at these events, both formal and informal, where recent speakers have included the Rt. Hon. Charles Clarke MP, Gavyn Davies, Sir Christopher Bland, David Elstein, the Rt. Hon. Tessa Jowell, MP, Mark Thompson and Michael Grade.

At home The Media Society awards an annual bursary to a promising student from a university media department, and abroad helps support young journalists working under difficult conditions.
